happy day.

6 Mar

some things that made me happy today…

deciding what to make with these lovely, fragrant lemons fresh from my sweet friend mirela’s abundant lemon tree (how’s that for adjectives!).

thank you mirela!

walking into g’s room and seeing him like this, happily playing with his trains.

having the time to work on my latest sewing project. just looking at these colors makes me feel good!

this little german boy that i found at a yard sale.

the warm sand between my toes at the beach today in malibu.

a happy day. a happy weekend.

buddies at the runway.

5 Mar

a front seat view of the runway at the santa monica airport proved to be an excellent spot to meet our buddies this week.

g and max had a wonderful morning cheering on the airplanes landings, waving to the pilots taking off, and yelling in glee over the roar of the planes while mirela and i had a great time chatting away and catching up. it reminded me of the days when dad would take us to the small waterdown airport after church and a dairy-queen run. fun memories to think back upon.

some moments required intense concentration and silence…

good buddies…

a la-la weekend.

28 Feb

a fun weekend here in la-la land.

started off with a pre-oscar party in beverly hills.  wish i could have brought my camera to that soiree.  the home, the people, the conversations that were oh-so “only-in-l.a.”.  entertaining to say the least!

wish my sista’s could have been here…getting ready to go out is just so much more fun with a roomful of girls!

then first thing saturday am, we left the coast and drove east towards the heat of palm desert where travis’ parents have rented a place.

there was such a cool 60’s vibe to the place.

the 60’s feel may have had to do with grammy’s beach attire…

or the cool lay-out of the place…

maybe the happy-hour drinks…

or knowing that these were the streets that Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and many other “old hollywood” walked…

loved the contrast of the snow peaked mountains surrounding this little desert town.

amazing how crisp, and cold the air felt in the morning, but by 10am we were ready to hit the pool…

had to include this one of peter and his cee-gar!

one of the first things i learned about the schneider family 12 years ago was that movie talk would dominate about 90% of all conversations and that watching the oscars is a never-to-be-missed family tradition.

so with sunday afternoon being the oscars, this called for a surprise appearance of george c. schneider in his finest…

a tux that was bought by grammy and pappy years ago.

unfortunately this has been g’s stance for the last week. doesn’t look too classy while wearing a tuxedo george!

g didn’t mind wearing these duds. he had a few jelly beans that persuaded him to wear this outfit.

those crazy schneiders…gotta love them!

saturday’s hunt

7 Feb

Everyone loves Saturday mornings. For many it means lazing around in pj’s, savouring their coffee while reading the Saturday paper, and just taking it slow.  Some days it’s like that for me, on other days it’s quite the opposite. If there are ‘yard sales’ posted in the classifieds and I am in the mood then Saturday morning is different.  I am quick to jump in the shower, eat my breakfast and get out the door. The hunt awaits!

Saturday morning yard sales and estate sales in the Palisades are one of a kind. Where else do you leave a yard sale with purchases packed away neatly in reusable cloth shopping bags?

Where else might you find a Coach Leather purse, a Burberry Jacket, and a Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron set in perfect condition for under $40 each?

Where else is “Brad” from “The Young and the Restless” hosting the Estate Sale and chatting away with your child? Or “Nicholas Newman” also from “The Y & R” selling his kid’s toys?  Are they strapped for cash and needing to peddle away their unwanted goods? No, most definitely not. It is just the trend out here to have an estate sale I guess…it’s following the trend of reduce/reuse/recycle I believe.  It’s good to be green!

Pacific Palisades is where it’s at!

A few of this past Saturday’s finds…

the warmth of george’s arms around my neck.

the warmth of his giggles in my ear.

the warmth of the sun on our back.

a perfect day.

oh how i love the colors of our farmer’s market produce…

I made up some of my favorite salad dressing with the fragrant, bright green bunches of fresh basil that I bought from our favorite stand. This recipe is from the cookbook ‘rebar’ that Isabel bought me for my wedding shower years ago. A great cookbook from the restaurant ‘rebar’ in Victoria, BC…predominately vegetarian with very cool recipes.  I still really love opening up this cookbook Isabel and trying out their recipes…makes me think of you in your bright teal kitchen in Nanaimo!

This dressing makes even simple salad of spinach leaves and avocado taste ‘restaurant-style’ excellent, if I do say so myself!

basil vinaigrette
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced…often i just use 1 garlic clove or none if i don’t want stinky breath the next day, but in the cases where we are having people over i do use the required amount as it really adds to the flavor
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 oz fresh basil leaves (i just use a BIG handful)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp fresh pepper
  • 1 cup olive oil
Combine all ingredients, except oil, in food processor and blend. Slowly add olive oil once all ingredients are throughly processed.
This can be refrigerated up to 3 or 4 days
Also, this is really tasty over baby potatoes!

While I made this dressing, G sat outside enjoying his favorite Farmer’s Market  buy…kettle corn! SO ADDICTIVE!

calling my name…

18 Jan

Yesterday was a beautiful, hot day. What made it even more beautiful was that I did not have to work as it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops G and I had a beautiful walk and picnic along the bluffs. The walk turned out longer to be expected so by the time we arrived home Georgie walked straight to his room, flopped down on his bed, and napped the afternoon away.  That made the day even more beautiful!

When I walked into our room, I was greeted by this…

What I couldn’t capture with my camera was the sound of the birds singing away in celebration of the warmth and the smell of the lovely purple flowers that are growing abundantly outside our window.

How could I not join my book on the bed and laze away a few moments (more like an hour) of the afternoon? It was just calling my name…
